What Is First Aid
Training?

Thinking of taking up first aid training? We fully support you! Taking the time to learn how to help in an emergency is an empowering step that can make a huge difference in someone's life. Here's what you can expect from your first aid training course.

First, you'll be taught the basics of assessing an emergency situation and determining the right course of action. You’ll learn how to recognise different types of injuries and illnesses and be equipped with the knowledge to respond appropriately — such as how to properly position a person in distress and how to apply bandages and splints.

The course will also teach how to provide basic life support, including CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

Additionally, the training will focus on communication skills and providing emotional support to someone in an emergency. This can be just as important as physical first aid, as it can help calm someone down and reassure them that they're not alone.

First aid training preparation

Nervous about your first day of training? Don’t be! There are a few things you can do to ensure your course goes smoothly. First, it’s a good idea to wear casual, loose-fitting garments. Since some first aid demonstrations will have you kneeling, you’ll want comfortable clothing that will let you perform the motions with ease. Flat shoes are also recommended to give you better freedom of movement.

Most first aid courses don’t require you to have any previous knowledge or do any readings. However, if you decide to take advanced first aid, you’ll have some pre-course studying and reading to do.

Finally, it’s essential that you show up on the day of training with a positive, can-do attitude and a willingness to participate!

Description of first aid training

To teach you the first aid principles, the course will feature a mix of theory and practical sessions. You’ll learn how to ensure the scene is safe, examine a victim, use an automated external defibrillator (AED), perform basic life support (BLS) and deal with trauma or bleeding.

The training course will also cover essential skills, including burn management, wound care and helping with breathing or choking emergencies. The instructors will teach you how to identify shock, cope with sudden ailments like seizures, stroke and heart attack and deal with fractured bones.

However, it’s important to note that some of the content will feature scenarios that mimic real emergencies, and you may find this emotionally upsetting. If you’re truly feeling uncomfortable, inform the trainer so they can provide additional assistance.

Practising the skills you learned at first aid lessons

At the end of the course, you will receive practice exams and tests to help assess how well you understood the lessons. The skills you acquire during these courses can give you the knowledge and tools you need to handle an emergency situation while waiting for medical aid to arrive.
